What Is A Dental Implant?
A dental implant is a permanent dental restoration, used to replace a missing tooth. Unlike dental bridges and other restorations such as dentures, dental implants can last for the rest of your life. This makes them the best choice if you have lost a tooth due to tooth decay, periodontal disease, or even an accident.
Dental implants use a two-part design to permanently replace a missing tooth. A dental post is placed where the root of the missing tooth used to be. This post bonds with surrounding gum and jawbone material over time, imitating the natural root.
After the post has bonded with the gum and jaw tissue, a crown is crafted to attach to the abutment of the dental post. Dr. Redford will build this crown to be the same shape, size, and color as your missing tooth, and he will attach it permanently with dental adhesive.
Understanding The Dental Implant Procedure
The dental implant procedure is usually performed by Dr. Redford in three appointments.
During your first appointment, your mouth will be examined by Dr. Redford, in order to ensure that your mouth is healthy enough for a dental implant. If your tooth is damaged and has not yet been removed, it will be pulled by Dr. Redford. This will require an additional appointment.
Next, Dr. Redford will use a topical anesthetic to numb the area of your missing tooth. Oral, IV sedation or general anesthesia may also be used, depending on your individual needs.
After your soft tissue has been numbed, Dr. Redford will remove gum material where the root of your missing tooth used to be. In this location, he will insert a post and abutment, usually made of either titanium or zirconium. Your artificial tooth will be bonded permanently to this post and abutment at your next appointment.
This is the only invasive part of the dental implant procedure. After your first appointment, Dr. Redford will send you home to recover until your dental post heals. You may feel some pain and discomfort for several days. This is treatable with over-the-counter pain medication.
Over the next 3-6 months, your dental post will permanently bond with your gum and jaw tissue. Once your dental post has healed completely, it is time for your second appointment. Dr. Redford will make molds of your teeth and jawbone, and then send these molds off to a lab in order to create a ceramic crown.
Finally, your crown will be installed, completing the dental implant procedure. This step of the procedure is non-invasive. Dr. Redford will check your crown to make sure it matches your surrounding teeth, and bond it into place with a permanent dental adhesive.
That’s it! In just 2-3 appointments, you can replace a missing tooth with a permanent, natural-looking dental implant at Redford Smiles!
Do Dental Implants Hurt?
This is a common question. The installation of the dental post can cause patients some discomfort. However, this is the only invasive part of the procedure, and Dr. Redford takes special care to ensure that patients have the anesthesia and sedation they need to mitigate this pain and discomfort.
While the dental post heals, patients may experience some discomfort. However, this usually only lasts for a few days, and the rest of the dental implant procedure is non-invasive.
Are Dental Implants Safe?
Absolutely. Dentists perform Hundreds of thousands of dental implant procedures every year. By taking precautions to prevent infection and treat patients with customized care, Dr. Redford can ensure that your dental implant procedure is 100% safe.
Do Dental Implants Require Special Care?
No! This is one of the best aspects of choosing a dental implant as a tooth replacement. They are the same as your teeth in just about every way. There is no specialized treatment or care required.
Simply follow common-sense oral health guidelines. Brush 2-3 times a day, floss regularly, and see Dr. Redford for a teeth cleaning every 6 months. Properly cared for, your dental implant will last for the rest of your life, with no specialized care required!
What Are The Most Common Types Of Dental Implants?
Most dental implants are either made of titanium or zirconium. Dental posts made from these materials have the ability to permanently bond with gum and jawbone tissue, making them the ideal choice for the procedure.
The dental crown used in the procedure can be manufactured from a wide variety of materials. Ceramic and porcelain crowns are the most common, as they’re customizable, and easy to match to the shape and color of your natural teeth.
