What Do Veneers And Lumineers Do?

Lumineers are simply a type of dental veneer. At Redford Smiles, we use Lumineers porcelain veneers because they are thinner and stronger than other types of veneer.

However, all veneers essentially do the same thing. They are wafer-thin pieces of porcelain, hand-crafted to surround and cover the front of your teeth. They bond permanently with the existing tooth structure, offering a natural-looking, beautiful smile.

When Are Veneers Used?

Veneers are typically only used to treat cosmetic issues. Veneers treat issues such as:

  • Misaligned/slightly crooked teeth
  • Discolored or stained teeth
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Teeth with significant gaps

Veneers are not meant to treat teeth that have been significantly damaged. Instead, veneers give patients with healthy teeth, a more natural, beautiful smile.

What Is The Porcelain Veneers Procedure?

Porcelain veneers are typically applied over the course of only two appointments. The procedure itself is minimally invasive, and most patients at Redford Smiles experience no pain or discomfort. Here’s how the procedure works.

After Dr. Redmond has confirmed that porcelain veneers are the best treatment for your teeth, you will come in for an initial fitting and preparation session.

During this visit, Dr. Redmond will use advanced molding and 3d modeling technology to assess the shape, size, and condition of your teeth. Then, veneers are prepared that perfectly match the size and shape of your teeth.

During this time, Dr. Redmond will also remove a very thin layer of enamel from the outside of the tooth. This layer of enamel is equal to the thickness of the veneers. By removing it, veneer application results in a perfect, seamless fit.

Because we use Lumineers at Redmond Smiles, very little enamel requires removal. In some cases, Dr. Redmond may not need to remove any enamel at all!

After your first session, you will typically have to wait 1-2 weeks for veneer preparation. Then, Dr. Redmond will schedule a follow-up appointment for veneer application.

The quality, size, and shape of the veneers are checked during this appointment. If the veneers fit perfectly, Dr. Redmond will apply the veneers. Each veneer is set and cured with powerful dental cement.

The entire porcelain veneer application process is non-invasive, and requires no anesthesia or sedation. Recovery time is minimal, and you should be able to resume your normal day-to-day activities within just a few hours.

Can Porcelain Veneers Stain?

Porcelain veneers are incredibly stain-resistant. This is one of the reasons that porcelain is the preferred material for veneers. With proper care and oral hygiene, there is little-to-no risk of staining porcelain veneers.

Despite this, porcelain veneers are not totally stain-proof. Food and drink that can stain teeth can also potentially stain your veneers. Excessive consumption of foods and beverages like wine, berries, coffee, and tea can potentially stain veneers. However, this is rare, and only occurs if you neglect regular oral care, such as brushing at least twice a day.

Can Porcelain Veneers Be Whitened?

Most porcelain veneers cannot be “whitened” with traditional tooth whitening techniques. However, because staining is rare, this is typically not an issue.

Tooth enamel is whitened by using a powerful bleaching agent to “lift” stains from the porous top layer of the enamel. Porcelain is non-porous, so normal teeth whitening techniques will not remove stains. However, Dr. Redford can use advanced cleaning and polishing techniques to remove surface stains from porcelain veneers.

Because veneers cannot be easily whitened, Redford Smiles recommends that patients who are undergoing veneer treatment whiten their teeth before veneer application. This ensures that your veneers match the natural color of your whitened teeth, and provide a natural, beautiful smile.

Do Porcelain Veneers Hurt?

Porcelain veneers are a non-invasive treatment. Veneer fitting and application is usually performed without the aid of sedation or anesthesia, as there is no need to cut into gum or tooth tissue.

Some patients may experience minimal discomfort during teeth trimming and fitting for veneers, during their initial appointment. However, the overall veneer installation process is totally painless.

There is no recovery time after placing veneers, either. Unless you chose to be sedated throughout veneer placement, you can return to normal activities immediately, and your teeth will not feel sore or painful.

Are Porcelain Veneers Permanent?

Yes. Porcelain veneers are meant as a permanent cosmetic dentistry solution. Because enamel removal is required in order to apply veneers, the procedure is not usually easily reversible. However, Lumineers veneers are reversible in some cases. Ask Dr. Redford to learn more.

With proper care, veneers will last anywhere from 7-20 years. This depends on the quality of the veneers, and whether or not you take proper care.

After veneer application, it’s important to follow a thorough oral care regimen. Brush and floss regularly, and see Dr. Redford for regular six-month teeth cleanings.

In addition, porcelain veneers can break or be dislodged by the chewing of hard or non-food objects. Avoid:

  • Chewing fingernails
  • Biting hard objects
  • Using teeth to open packages/envelopes
  • Grinding teeth (bruxism)

With proper care and precautions, your veneers can easily last you up to two decades.
